Nadja

dir. Michael Almereyda · 93 min

Dracula is dead, and his daughter Nadja drifts through nocturnal New York mourning a father she despised. Her search for connection draws her towards Lucy, an unhappily married woman, while Van Helsing and his reluctant followers close in. As desire, family blood and ancient grudges tighten around her, Nadja must decide whether escape from her inheritance is possible, or whether every vampire story is doomed to repeat itself. Michael Almereyda turns the Dracula myth into a deadpan downtown fever dream, mixing ravishing 35mm monochrome with ghostly Fisher-Price PixelVision. Elina Löwensohn gives the film its cool, bruised centre, joined by Peter Fonda as a wonderfully bedraggled Van Helsing. Executive-produced by David Lynch, Nadja is romantic, funny and deeply strange: an art-house vampire film steeped in cigarette smoke, alienation and the dying light of pre-millennial Manhattan.
